    veterans dinner november 9th, 2024

     

    Watertown Elks # 496 hosted an amazing Veterans Dinner on the evening of Saturday, November 9th, 2024.  Nearly 100 people attended the Turkey dinner.  Dinner included: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables, salad, dinner rolls, and desserts.  Meals were all donated and prepared by amazing volunteers.

    Evening included our honored guest speaker; Eric B. Soluri, Retired United States Air Force Chief Master Sergeant.  The evening was introduced by our Veterans Committee chairman Past Exalted Ruler Ed Massa.  Exalted Ruler Mike opened the evening and introduced Reverend Linda Taber for invocation.  Star Spangled Banner was performed by a singer from Fort Drum.  Esquire Karen Miller and the Boys Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Before close of the evening, the Veterans Committee presented a check for $1,000 to Joseph P Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Center in Jefferson County.  The $1,000 was received from Freedom Grant from the Grand Lodge.  A lot of money was raised by the Veterans Committee's fund-raising events held over the summer with a lot of donations being made to the Feed Our Vets program, Camp Bristol Veterans Program, Welcome Home Kits done by the committee (all monies were reimbursed by the Elks National Veterans Service Commission), the USO, etc.

    Reverend Linda Taber and her husband also presented a check to the Veterans Committee in gratitude of the committee's commitment and support to the local veterans' programs.

    Veterans Committee Chairman PER Ed Massa would like to thank all the committee members and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the Vets.  He would like to thank the committee members Fran Alberry, Sheri Doroha, Renee Cook, Karen Miller, Jay Miller, PER Dennis Brady, Linda Lepper.  He would also like to thank the supporters and volunteers PER Anne Fleming, PSP Tim Kelly, PDDGER Jill Bruce Wiley, Korey Phelps, Lisa Cooley, Lisa Margaret Greene, Linda Cantwell.  Special thanks to Chris "Mongo" McCauley, Geoff Mattraw, Robin Riley and the Boy Scouts for preparing and serving us meals.  Thanks to the several members of Watertown Lodge for their continuous support to the Veterans Committee (too many to name).
    Last, but not in the least, thank you to those that attended the dinner.  Thank you to the Veterans for their service in defending and maintaining the freedom of our Country!

    busy november month

    DD/SVP Visit November 7th

    On November 7th, we had our District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and District State Vice President's visit to our Lodge along with several members from NINE other Lodges in our district visiting.  Our volunteers cooking and serving meals as well as cleaning up after were HUGE!!!  Thank You, Volunteers!!!

    Veterans Dinner Nov 9th

    This Dinner turned out to be another huge success (see story below).  Again, so many volunteers came out and helped make this event go smoothly.

    The $1,000 donation to Joseph P Dwyer Peer Outreach Center was made possible by Freedom Grant.

    125th Anniversary / State President's Visit

    Saturday, November 19th was our 125th Anniversary celebration along with State President's Visit.  What a night!  We had about 100 people from several different Lodge come and help us celebrate and to meet with the NYSEA State President Tania DeFrank.  Assemblyman Scott Gray was also present.


    Again, a ton of volunteers came out and were HUGE!!!  We can never thank the volunteers enough!

    Harvest Dinner November 24th

    At least 35 volunteers came out to help with cooking, serving and delivering over 600 meals!!!  390 meals were delivered to area Senior Citizens apartments in Watertown and over 200 meals were handed out in our drive-thru event.

    Dictionary Project & Backpack Program

    The Dictionary Project is ongoing and hoping to be completed by Christmas.  Dictionaries have been delivered to nine schools so far and third graders are loving their new book.  This was made possible by $2,500 from Gratitude Grant.


    The Backpack program was another success with Watertown Lodge.   Checks were delivered to nine school districts that our Lodge serves. Total amount of $6,000 that was received from the Beacon Grant for the Back Program ended up going to 28 different schools. All schools were thrilled with our Lodge’s contribution. 

    Warm hands warm feet

    On Wednesday afternoon, December 4th, 2024, the Watertown Elks Lodge # 496 presented a check for $1,808.17 to CAPC of Jefferson County at Davidson Street, Watertown, NY for the Warm Hands, Warm Feet project.  The Community Action Planning Council purchased several boots and mittens for the Head Start children at CAPC.  The money was raised by members of Lodge # 496 with such giving hearts.


    Each year, members of Watertown Elks Lodge # 496 send monetary donations towards Harvest Dinner for Senior Citizens, Warm Hands Warm Feet project and Children's Christmas Party as part of the Lodge's Magical Holiday giving (November through December).


    PSP Tim Kelly, PSVP Joan Carlo and Lodge Secretary PER Dennis Brady was on hand to present the check to Caroline Feasler, Family Center Director of Community Action Planning Council.

      Past State President Tim Kelly led the Installation of Officers on this Saturday evening, March 29, 2025. He has declared these officers duly installed!

      Memorial Day 2025

        Monday, May 26, 2025

        Several officers and members were in attendance in observance of Memorial Day.  The day started with honoring our Honorary Outer Guard Harold Wright's gravesite across the street from Lodge # 496.  The Elks then proceeded to the VFW Post # 1400 and then to the American Legion Post # 61.  Thankfully, the overcast in early morning gave way to sunny skies as wreaths were being laid at the VFW, American Legion and concluded at Northside Cemetery.

        Also at the Fall Conference, our ER got to meet with NYSEA President John Lawless.  Lawless will be visiting our Lodge on November 14th and 15th (he will be visiting all ten Lodges in our district on that weekend).

        major project's dueling pianos fundraiser

        On Saturday, October 18th, our Lodge hosted our biggest Major Project fundraiser for the 2025-2026 year.  Dueling Pianos performed by Flying Ivories put on such an entertaining show for everyone present!

        Fun was had by all!  Thanks to our Major Project chair Lisa Green and her crew for putting on a successful event!

        Dictionary Program

        PSVP Joan Carlo, Dictionary Project Chair, has been going to schools to hand out dictionaries to third graders. The back 1/3 of the dictionary is filled with lots of interesting facts. The students’ excitement when they get the dictionaries is wonderful to see. Teachers are always appreciative also. There are 22 classrooms that will be visited. We are able to do this through Gratitude grant from the Grand Lodge. This is a picture of Mrs. Brennen’s third graders from Lyme Central School.

          Veterans Dinner

          On November 8, 2025, the Watertown Elks Lodge # 496 held their annual Veterans Dinner at their Lodge on 728 Bradley Street, Watertown, NY. Their cocktail hour was from 5 to 6 PM and dinner followed. The order of the Elks has designated November as Veterans Remembrance Month. The Veterans Dinner is part of the Elks pledge, “So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them”.

          The night opened with introduction from Veterans Committee chair, PER Ed Massa. Exalted Ruler Phil Nuffer did the opening and Lodge Chaplain Margaret Bootie led us in prayer. PSVP Joan Carlo led us in singing the Star Spangled Banner and Leading Knight Anthony Demiceli led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

          The dinner was well attended by many area Veterans, guests, honored guests and two guest speakers.

          Dinner followed and included Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce and a delicious cake was served as dessert.

          Honored guests were Carol Lewis and Kristen Clukey, wife and daughter of our deceased member William J Lewis, who was a Vietnam war veteran. The duo held a fundraising golf tournament on Father’s Day this past June in honor of William J Lewis and raised $4,100 to feed our local veterans through Watertown Elks Lodge.

          Guest speakers were Irene Riley from Feed Our Vets and David Nunez from Peer-to-Peer Outreach Center. Certificate of Appreciations were given to Joseph Navarra Jr. for his work maintaining our Outer Guard that is cross the street from the Lodge and to deceased member Major General Robert J Kasulke in memory and honor for his service to all Veterans, which was received by Matt and Sarah Marino. A $1,000 check, received from Freedom Grant, was also presented to Joseph P Dwyer Veterans Peer-to-Peer Support for temporary emergency housing for our local Veterans.

          Drawing for Afghan Raffle took place near the end of the night and the winner of the beautiful Afghan blanket and matching pillows went to Linda Cantwell.

          Special thanks to all the volunteers for cooking up delicious meals and serving them.           Saturday, November 22, 2025, the Watertown Elks Lodge # 496 held their annual Hoop Shoot contest for area youths.  Member Michael Branski was the Lodge's Hoop Shoot director and did a great job on his first year.  He's looking forward to doing better after his first learning experience.

          24 area youths took their try at the charity stripes on the hardwood court at Jefferson Community College on Coffeen Street in Watertown, NY.

          NYSEA STATE PRESIDENT'S VISIT AT OUR LODGE

          New York State Elks Association 2025-2026 State President John Lawless came to visit our Lodge on November 15, 2025, for an afternoon visit and a luncheon.  He is visiting the 10 Lodges in the north country, the North Central District # 6240.  Prior to arriving at our Lodge, he attended Gouverneur Lodge for breakfast and then went to the USO at Fort Drum for a visit and making a donation that was collected from the Fall Conference.


          State President's visit this weekend kicked off with a visit at Ogdensburg Lodge on Thursday evening, then a breakfast at Massena on Friday morning before proceeding to Malone, Saranac Lake for cocktails and snacks and then to Potsdam for dinner.  Saturday's visit included breakfast at Gouverneur, the USO at Fort Drum, Watertown Lodge for lunch and then to Carthage Lodge for dinner.  Sunday's visit includes a visit to Lowville Lodge for breakfast and to Boonville Lodge for lunch before heading back home.


          State President Lawless is a member of NYS Elks' largest Lodge, Haverstraw Lodge # 877.  North Central District's PSP Stu Rishe, PSP Tim Kelly, DDGER Brian Dezell, SVP Dan Shannon and Empire State editor Tim Welpe accompanied the State President throughout this visit.
